Creating a Green Belt

It was never feasible to move the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder further from the Golden Mile and obviously the mine itself could not be moved. It was possible however to create a buffer around the mine to enable some separation of the two.

This was done through consultation with the local community and the then Department of Minerals and Energy. This led to the creation of a buffer zone between the people and the mine known at the Safety Exclusion Zone.

The buffer area was also rehabilitated to improve the landscape. Since 1991, 210,000 trees have been planted and 730 hectares rehabilitated.
