Living in Kalgoorlie-Boulder

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is the regional centre for the Goldfields-Esperance region and is home to around 30,000 people, making it the largest city in the Australian Outback. This bustling, vibrant city has much to offer its current and prospective residents.

Sports facilities and opportunities
Sport and leisure are popular pursuits in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. The Goldfields Oasis is the City’s major recreational centre, including a 50 meter indoor swimming pool, children’s pool, multi-purpose indoor and outdoor courts, playing fields and gymnasium. The area supports a number of different sporting associations, including Aussie rules football, cricket, netball, soccer, tennis, hockey and swimming. Also represented are basketball, dancing, bowls, horse racing & trotting and touch football. There is never a dull moment on the Goldfields whatever the season, and getting involved is a great place to way new people.

Community & Social Life
With a vibrant social scene and more restaurants and hotels per capita than any other regional centre in Western Australia, there’s no shortage of somewhere to socialise in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Whether it’s a pub, café or quality restaurant, every taste and occasion is catered for. A number of the region’s largest social and community events take place in the City, including the annual Race Round, Diggers and Dealers Mining Forum, St Barbara’s Festival, Royal Flying Doctors Swim Through, and Spring Festival, just to name a few.

Shopping
As the retail hub of the Goldfields-Esperance region Kalgoorlie-Boulder boasts a number of multi-national business chains, as well as a strong and progressive small business community. Historic Hannan and Burt Streets are the major shopping precincts, housing a mixture of retail outlets and shop fronts. The City is also serviced by major supermarket chains Coles, Woolworths and IGA, as well as department stores K-Mart and Target. A number of award winning hairdressers and beauticians are also located in the major shopping areas.

Education
There are nine primary schools and four secondary schools in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, offering excellent educational programs and modern, well equipped facilities. Curtin University of Technology has a vibrant higher education campus in Kalgoorlie-Boulder and is also home to the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM), whose reputation for innovation, diversity and uniqueness is world renowned. Amongst the different tertiary providers, including Curtin VTEC (Vocational Education Centre), students are provided with unique learning opportunities in a range of University programs.

Housing
When it comes to housing in the City there is variety of suburbs and styles of housing to choose from, each with its own unique qualities and appeal. From inner city living in the heart of Central Kalgoorlie, to charming character homes in both Lamington (north of Kalgoorlie) and central Boulder. O’Connor and Hannans are well known for their executive style and luxury homes. No matter what the taste, budget or lifestyle there is suburb in Kalgoorlie-Boulder to suit everyone.
